SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Kansas City Royals right-hander Luke Hochevar will have Tommy John surgery that will sideline the pitcher for the season. Hochevar felt a twinge in his elbow on the next-to-last pitch of a scoreless two-inning outing Monday against the Chicago White Sox. An MRI on Tuesday revealed a major tear of the ulnar collateral ligament. The severity of the injury was confirmed Thursday by Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles. "What I didnt want to hear," Hochevar said Friday. Hochevar missed nearly three months in 2010 with a sprained right elbow, making just 17 starts that season. "I knew this day was coming," Hochevar said. "After the first time I hurt it, I knew it was coming. Im extremely thankful it held up for four years." The 30-year-old Hochevar went 5-2 with a 1.92 ERA and two saves in 58 relief appearances last season. He held opponents to a .169 batting average, which ranked third among AL relievers with at least 60 innings. Hochevar switched to the bullpen last year after going 38-59 with a 5.44 ERA in 128 career starts. Hochevar was the first player picked in the 2006 draft. He will make $5.21 million this year and is eligible for free agency after this season. "We wouldnt rule Luke out for the future," Royals general manager Dayton Moore said. "Well hopefully be able to keep him in the organization going forward." Free agency, however, was not on Hochevars mind with surgery pending to replace the ligament in his elbow. "That is irrelevant right now," Hochevar said. "That will all fall into play if Im healthy and I can pitch." Manager Ned Yost said Hochevar decided to have surgery in the next weeks instead of instead of rest and rehab for two months. "This thing is going to blow," Yost said of Hochevars ligament. "It is going to go, sooner or later." The Royals won 86 games last year, their most victories since the 1989 club went 92-70. Kansas City hasnt been in the playoffs since winning the 1985 World Series. "The toughest part about it is were primed this year to win," Hochevar said. "You want to be part of that dog pile in September. The way the teams shaping up, were going to win. Thats not a doubt from every standpoint." "I want to be a part of it. It is just not going to happen," he said. Right-handers Kelvin Herrera and Aaron Crow and left-hander Tim Collins will likely be the primary setup men for closer Greg Holland in Hochevars absence. Jarret Stoll Jersey . First, Ivan Nova decided to have season-ending Tommy John elbow surgery. Then Michael Pineda was suspended for 10 games for using pine tar. Joe Kocur Jersey . Starting from pole, the 26-year-old Vettel turned in a trademark clinical performance to win the Indian Grand Prix on Sunday and join F1 greats Juan Manuel Fangio and Michael Schumacher as just the third driver to win four consecutive championships. http://www.rangershockeyonlineshop.com/ ... ey-jersey/. Lawries batting helmet hit an umpire during his ninth-inning outburst in the Jays 4-3 loss to Tampa Bay on Tuesday. The 22-year-old threw his helmet to the ground and it bounced up and hit home plate umpire Bill Miller on the right hip after Lawrie was called out on strikes for the second out. Antti Raanta Jersey . In their first meeting for six years, the Frenchmen dropped serve twice in the first set, but Giquel broke Simon two more times in the second. Gicquel moves on to face sixth-seeded Jarkko Nieminen of Finland, who advanced with a 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5) win against wild card Pierre-Hugues Herbert, despite the Frenchmans 23 aces. Chris Kreider Jersey . PETERSBURG, Fla.ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Von Miller is back -- and bigger than ever. His coach and his teammates said Denvers All-Pro linebacker looked great Wednesday in his first practice since serving his six-game drug abuse suspension -- all 270 pounds of him. Thats how much Miller said he weighed in at this week, a good 24 pounds heavier than when he won Defensive Rookie of the Year honours in 2011. Miller has long wanted to gain weight because he figures it will help him overpower offensive linemen. Six weeks of watching games on his TV gave him that chance, although by all accounts he was far from a couch potato during his banishment for violating the leagues drug-abuse policy. Miller said he had no trouble with the extra muscle or the altitude because he served his suspension working with the Broncos trainers, a nutritionist and a personal pass rush specialist so that his cardiovascular conditioning wouldnt be an issue upon his return. "I feel good. Im in the best shape of my life," Miller said. "I feel a lot stronger, quicker, faster. Its not like Im running 100 yards or 400 yards there, so I definitely felt good. All the feedback I was getting from my teammates and everybody looked like I was good. There was a hurry-up period in there that was tough, but thats what its designed to be is tough." Coach John Fox said Miller "had an outstanding practice. Obviously hes got fresh legs and ready to roll and excited about the opportunity this week." Safety Rahim Moore said, "Im quite sure he misses the game a lot but he hasnt missed a step. He had a great practice today. He looked good. Im looking forward to watching him play." The Broncos may have gone 6-0 in Millers absence, but they sorely missed him disrupting quarterbacks -- theyre ranked dead last in the league in pass defence. "Hes going to makee a huge difference," cornerback Chris Harris said.dddddddddddd "Teams have just been coming out and saying, Its going to be seven on seven, were just going to throw the ball. If they come out and do that now, we have our rusher now to where they cant just sit back and pass the ball all day like that." Miller was clearly relieved to return to practice and answer questions about football after months of stories about his suspension and about traffic tickets. "I feel stronger just all around, mentally, physically, all around," Miller said. "When you dont have to worry about nothing, its just football, its a whole lot easier. Ive been studying and everything. I just feel good. Ive said it before. Im in a great place physically and mentally." Miller said hes been "paying attention in meetings, even more so than I would do normally. But I was ready to go. I wanted to make sure when I came back that I wasnt a step behind. If anything, Ive been conditioning and working out and doing everything possible to get myself ready for practice and the games." Miller also spent a week during his suspension working with renowned pass-rush specialist Chuck Smith, a former defensive end with the Atlanta Falcons. "Definitely working with a guy that focuses on pass rush, especially for me while I had all this time off to focus on that, it was instrumental," Miller said. "He didnt try to change me; he just helped me." The Broncos also welcomed back middle linebacker Wesley Woodyard (shoulder stringer) and defensive end Robert Ayers (shoulder) back to practice after both missed a week. Miller, who had 30 sacks in his first two seasons, including a franchise-record 18 1/2 last season, makes his debut Sunday against the Colts (4-2) in Peyton Mannings return to Indianapolis.
