Unrelenting, devious but full of heart. And be utterly absorbed by this riveting debut that had me reading till the wee hours of the night. A thriller star is born. This debut thriller author is a true storyteller, highly reminiscent of Dean Koontz. If the urge is there then we can learn the craft. But first, we need the urge. The urge is what drives us to perfect our craft. Is there a writer gene and is storytelling genetic? And are there sub categories of the writer gene just like there are sub genres in writing. If there is a "dark" writer gene, well, that fits me perfectly. I like writing from the dark places. To spiral my characters into tragedy - with a dash of hope. On the page I can act out horrific events by evil people and never get arrested. His anger drained away and he felt relief. He returned his mind to his body in the car. He needed to rest before continuing north. Traveling with his powers expended such energy it left him weak. But he needed to leave the car and hide out. He walked into the woods, breathing deep of all the life around him. After heading half a mile into the woods away from the dirt road, he found a hollow and lay down on the ground covering himself in a mound of leaves. Within a few minutes his body heat warmed him inside his cocoon and X slept. It was his turn to dream of the girl. He chased her as he always did, toying with her before he shredded her throat. But this time she stopped running and turned to walk back towards him. He stopped in his tracks, amazed she would do that when she knew he would kill her. I know what you are. We are the same. How did she know he wanted to be called Charlie? His mission had been to kill her. It had always been so. If it changed now what would he do? What would he become? Donna has some serious incite on the condition of the human soul. As well as the condition of the human mind and hearts. Within the book, you follow the characters from time of devastation and the will and strength of what they will do or how far they will go to rationalize their actions both good and bad. I like the humor she lightens the mood just to turn the lights out on you. Ben, 9yrs old when his mom and dad were killed by a freak occurrence of a meteorite fell to earth and how it changed him. Sarah, who was giving birth and was vulnerable to the cruelty of the Doctor and nurses who were driven by greed and put little stock in their Hippocratic Oath. Laura, her secret ability and how far she will go to find the killer of her parents. Jim and Laura and Charlie a man who hates everyone and everything with Laura at the top of his list. The line of good or bad is not always clear as in the case of Felix. The story line was unique with interesting characters and events. There was a lot of action and suspense, which was what kept me reading. I found myself skipping over the sex scenes, which there were a few too many of for my liking, as they were very graphic and steamy. The darkness of the villain, what fuels his anger, attacks, and the thread of evil in him is very reminiscent of Koontz style. It starts with the crash of a meteorite and that event changes the lives of many, but especially the hero, Ben, and heroine, Laura. The hero, Ben knows loss all too well and is closed to love and commitment. His life has been one of reckless abandon. Laura is coping with supernatural skills and is the target of a dark evil wanting to destroy her as it has everything she cares about. Both characters have to come to know and accept whom they really are inside and make changes to be whole. This inner journey, to understand their life, sends both on a quest to find out what REALLY happened the night the meteor fell. Along the way to the crash site they meet up and join forces and making both a target. There are some great characters in this story. I Loved the mystery created around the man in black. The romance between Ben and Laura is good and ups the ante in the story. This is a book to read this summer. Their Lives were markedly different. Ben had a horrific childhood and grew to be a damaged adult. Eventually, they meet fall in love. Both of them struggle with themselves and each other to come to grips with their past, Ben has to forget a history of abuse while Laura deals with being human- Maybe. And finally, who or what is trying to kill Laura? Aided by an Erie "man in black", who claims to have been watching them all of their lives the two are determined to get to the bottom of the mystery and make a normal future for both of them. How they do it is, well, interesting. This story is a genuine stew pot pot of horror, sci-fi, mystery and romance.
