JAKARTA， Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- The threat of terrorism would likely to persist in Indonesia in 2017 after a spate of terror attacks with a dozen suspects having been killed or arrested by Indonesian police this year.


The archipelago country in Southeast Asia witnessed increasing terrorist activities in 2016 with 170 terrorism cases nationwide. That figure was significantly higher than 82 recorded last year.


"The increasing terrorism cases were related to the ongoing situation in Syria and Iraq，" Indonesian Police Chief General Tito Karnavian said on Wednesday.


The joint international military campaigns against the Islamic State strongholds in those two countries made IS looking for other countries to host their worldwide operation.


"The massive airstrikes conducted by joint forces made them cornered this year. It forced them to launch their operation from outside Syria and Iraq. Indonesia is part of countries they have targeted，" Tito said.


The Indonesian police would also intensify monitoring nationals travelling to Syria and those who come back from that country.


The measure was aimed at preventing the spread of IS radical ideology possibly disseminated by those returning from Syria.


"Once they are found (to have joined IS) we would name them suspects，" Tito said.


According to the police， around 600 Indonesians travelled to Syria this year.


The Indonesian police would strengthen their coordination with the Foreign Ministry and counterparts from Malaysia， Singapore and Turkey， he added.


The police will also continue the efforts to hunt for Bahrun Naim， an Indonesian Muslim militant fighter who has close links with IS senior leaders. They have contacted authorities from related countries regarding the task.


"We also intensify efforts to dismantle his communication network with his cell groups. We suspect that he is now hiding in Syria or Iraq，" Police Headquarters spokesman Boy Rafly Amar said.


Bahrun， who was identified of being closely linked to terror attacks in Indonesia this year， recruits and runs his cells operating in Indonesia through internet chat Apps.


Indonesian police's anti-terror squad has foiled several attacks planned by 13 Bahrun-linked cells， killed five and arrested more than 20 in several provinces in the past week.


They were accused of plotting terror attacks， including in the presidential palace and during Christmas and New Year's Eve celebrations.


Tito said the police would also continue an operation around restive area of Poso in Central Sulawesi province to root out terrorist group of East Indonesia Mujahidin (MIT) by tracking down its remaining members in Poso's mountainous areas.


The Indonesian police killed MIT leader Santoso， who pledged allegiance to the IS group， in a gunfight in July.


Indonesia has arrested more than 150 people from across the country related to terrorism this year.


Apart from terror threat， police would also clamp down on fake news and hoaxes circulated on the social media， which they said of potentially inciting violence among the people and eventually threatening the nation's unity.


The police chief said curbing fake news on social media would require coordinated efforts among related governments and agencies.
